One of the titles emerging from this year’s Cannes Film Festival with the highest word of mouth was “Son of Saul.” Awarded with the Festival’s Grand Prix, the film features poet and first-time actor Géza Röhrig as the titular Saul, a Sonderkommando prisoner of Auschwitz. Grim material, but nevertheless a reportedly landmark debut from director László Nemes that pits you squarely in the protagonist’s perspective and a likely front-runner for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar this season. It releases in select cities December 19, and hopefully not soon after in filmmixtape’s area – it’s one of our most-anticipated!
